There are now dozens of scientific studies showing the effects of lighting on human biorhythms. To increase our psycho-physical well-being, artificial light should vary in a dynamic way just like natural light. However, few people know that designing a lighting scheme that doesn't disrupt biological rhythms is even more important for children. A 2018 study by the American Physiological Society showed that light can have a negative effect on the sleep quality of children aged 3 to 5 years.
Specifically, it has shown that too much intense light inhibits the production of melatonin (the hormone that makes us fall asleep). Daycare center is the place where the light to which children are exposed requires special attention. But lighting should also be designed to ensure well-being in schools as well.
This was the main goal that the OLEV team in cooperation with architects pursued for the lighting project of the first art-and-music-oriented Daycare Centre in Italy. The Centre offers an innovative educational program based on music and expressive arts to children between age 3 and 6.
The lighting requirements were diverse. It was necessary to illuminate the common areas, the music classrooms, the offices, and many other different spaces.
Lighting has been designed to offer children the best possible visual comfort during all the activities carried out in the Centre. This way, it is possible to avoid the negative effects that the wrong light can have at a stage of life where the body is more vulnerable. Thanks to light, environment has been transformed into a playful and sensory experience that will leave children with everlasting memories of their childhood. The Centre offers an innovative educational program based on music and expressive arts. The lighting scheme was designed to encourage kids to express themselves and travel with their imagination. For example, to illuminate the common areas, unique pendant lamps were created. These lighting fixtures with their wide circular shape remind children of large flying saucers.
For the themed areas where the children gather and the classrooms with the musical instruments, technical but comfortable lighting was chosen. It creates spaces and sensory experience and children can see the instrument clearly and discover all its details.
